Simon Karczmar

Polish-French, Israeli, born 1903 in Warsaw, died in 1982 at 79 years old. He spent much tme with his grandfather in Dzieweniszky, a small Lithuanian shtetl with its "chata" (delapidated wooden houses). It was this homely and pious life sparked with traditional events which inspired him to paint. After studying in Paris at the Ecole de Beaux Arts and working there for 20 years, he emigrated to Safed, Israel. He has held one man shows in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Paris. He is best known for his vivid scenes of Jewish traditions, weddings, etc., and atmospheres of Chassidic ecstasy.
